Bacyadan, Who Was Previously Banned from the World Championships, Will Compete in the Women's Boxing Division in Paris

By Karleigh Webb July 31, 2024

July 22, 1985, nicknamed Cacahuate, is an American professional boxer who, in 2018, became the first transgender boxer to fight. Filipino boxer Hergie Bacyadan shares his thoughts about being a trans man in his sport a night before his debut bout which he lost.

Trans boxer Hergie Bacyadan is set to make an historic Olympic debut in Paris as he competes in the women's boxing division. Bacyadan, who was previously banned from competing in the world championships because she failed testosterone and gender eligibility tests, has been cleared to compete in the Olympics after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) changed its rules last year.

Bacyadan's Olympic debut is a major milestone for transgender athletes. It is the first time that a trans boxer has competed in the Olympics, and it is a sign of the growing acceptance of transgender people in sports.
