Cyprus: Geographical Overview

Location and Geography

Cyprus is a strategically located island situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It lies south of Turkey, north of Egypt, east of Greece, and west of Lebanon. With an area of approximately 9,250 square kilometers, it is the third-largest and third-most populous island in the Mediterranean region.

Major Geographical Features

The physical geography of Cyprus includes a rugged mountain range traversing the island's center, with Mount Olympus being the highest peak. The central plain, Mesaoria, separates the northern Kyrenia Mountains from the southern Troodos Mountains. The island boasts sandy beaches, fertile valleys, and a variety of rivers, including the Pedieos and Yialias.

Neighboring Countries and Maritime Borders

As an island nation, Cyprus does not share any land borders with other countries. Its maritime boundaries extend in the north towards Turkey, in the east and southeast towards Lebanon and Syria, and in the west and south towards Greece and Egypt.
