Cyprus: A Divided Island

The Cyprus Conflict

The island of Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded the northern part of the island in response to a Greek-inspired coup d'état. The conflict between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots has been a major source of tension in the region ever since.

The Current Situation

Today, the island remains divided, with the Greek Cypriots controlling the south and the Turkish Cypriots controlling the north. The United Nations maintains a buffer zone between the two sides, and there have been several attempts to negotiate a peace settlement.

However, these efforts have so far been unsuccessful, and the island remains divided. The conflict has had a devastating impact on the lives of the Cypriot people, and it continues to be a major obstacle to peace and stability in the region.
